Lata Mangeshkar – “India’s Nightingale” dies at 92

At 92 years old, the versatile singer, Lata Mangeshkar passed away. It had been almost a month since she had been ill. Her admission to the Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai took place on January 8. Fans were wishing him well. It has been an inconsolable time for the entire country since the death of Lata Mangeshkar. Everyone is paying homage to her with moist eyes. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has remembered the moments spent with him on the death of Bharat Ratna Lata Mangeshkar & paid tribute to her. He tweeted, ‘Lata Mangeshkar expresses various emotions through her songs”. She closely observed the changes that have taken place in the Indian film industry over the decades.

Lata Mangeshkar – “The prodigy”

Lata was born on 28th September 1929 in Indore to famous musician Dinanath Mangeshkar. Bharat Ratna awardee Lata had mastered singing at a very young age. She sang songs in different languages. Lata sang more than 50000 songs in 36 languages. She has received a number of honors. Those are the Bharat Ratna, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan & Dadasaheb Phalke Award for her incomparable contribution in the field of singing. Lata performed on the international stage for the 1st time in 1974. She performed with the Rain Orchestra at the world-famous Royal Albert Hall in Britain. The magical voice of Lata enchanted the British.

The legendary singer never married in her lifetime. She always lived with her 4 siblings. Music was also a passion of her siblings. Lata’s father Dinanath Mangeshkar was a late Marathi actor & classical singer. Dinanath & Shevanti Mangeshkar had 5 children and 1 of them was Lata. Lata was the eldest of all her siblings. She was followed by Meena Khadikar, Asha Bhosle, Usha Mangeshkar & the youngest Hridaynath Mangeshkar. All the Mangeshkar brothers & sisters made great achievements in the field of music. Well-known Bollywood actress Waheeda Rehman while talking to Times of India revealed that Lata Mangeshkar was very much in love with chocolate. That was her only weak link. Waheeda Rehman was extremely fond of Lata.

With full state honors, Shivaji Park in Mumbai was the venue for her last rites. Millions of people paid tribute to her.

Lata Mangeshkar / Mourning in Pakistan

There’s mourning not only in India but also in Pakistan on the death of music queen Lata Mangeshkar. Pakistan’s state-run television also reported Lata’s death. Private news channels also paid tribute to her by playing songs of the versatile singer. Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan, Information & Broadcasting Minister Fawad Chaudhry, Pakistan cricket team captain Babar Azam have paid tribute to him by tweeting.

The ambassadors of France & Afghanistan wrote –

Emmanuel Lenin, the French ambassador to India, wrote, “Deeply saddened by the passing of Bharat Ratna Lata Mangeshkar”. She received France’s highest civilian award. The Insignia of ‘Officier de la Legion d’Honneur’ (Officer of the Legion of Honour) for her incomparable singing.

Our heartfelt condolences to her loved ones & fans around the world.” wrote Afghanistan’s ambassador to India, Farid Mamundje, at the sad demise of Lata Mangeshkar. She was 1 of India’s greatest playback singers for more than 7 decades. She has spread every genre & culture through music. It was her God-given voice that will live on forever.

Diplomatic circles mourn the loss of the “Nightingale of India”

Messages from around the world mourned the passing of the ‘Nightingale of India’. US Embassy in Delhi said, “It’s our deep sadness to learn that Lata Mangeshkar has passed away”. History will mark her contribution to the music of India in golden words. The Embassy of Israel in India wrote in its condolence message – “It’s very sad to hear about the death of the Nightingale of India. We’ll always remember her contribution to music”. Israel’s Consul General in Mumbai, Kobbi Shoshani, wrote, “Songs are part of the culture. Part of our memories. Thank you, Lata.”

National mourning on 6th & 7th February

The Central Government has declared national mourning on the 6th & 7th February on the death of Lata Mangeshkar. The national flag will remain half-masted on February 6th & 7th during national mourning. The cremation of her body took place in Mumbai at 6.30 pm on Sunday with state honors. Both the Rajya Sabha & Lok Sabha will adjourn for an hour on Monday in her honor after paying homage to her.

Telugu state chief ministers mourned her death

Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao & Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy on Sunday condoled the demise of the legendary playback singer Lata Mangeshkar. Chandrashekhar Rao said Latha has left a lasting impression in playback singing for the past 8 decades. Her demise has left a permanent void in the country’s music world. The Chief Minister said that Lata gave us divine music through her singing. She’s a gift of God to Indian music. The Chief Minister said that the world of music became empty with the death of Lata. Lata has sung 50,000 songs in 1,000 films in 20 languages, he said.

Chattisgarh Government declared 2 days of mourning

The Chhattisgarh government on Sunday announced 2 days of state mourning in honor of Bharat Ratna Lata Mangeshkar. The national flag will be flown at half-mast on all government buildings on February 6th & 7th. There’ll be no entertainment or cultural programs organized by the government.

Lata spent her last days remembering her father. Lata’s brother Hridaynath Mangeshkar told voice-over artist Harish Bhimani that Lata was missing her father Dinanath Mangeshkar. Lata was listening to her father’s recordings & even tried to sing them.

Celebs who paid tribute to Lata

Many Bollywood stars including Madhur Bhandarkar, Ranbir Kapoor, Siddharth Roy Kapur, Shankar Mahadevan, Shraddha Kapoor, Shahrukh Khan, Amitabh Bachchan had come to pay tribute to her.
